I knew nothing about this aspect of WWII until I read this story, and, of course, had to go read up on it myself. This is my absolute favorite of Annette Lyon's novellas. Anna begs for an assignment from her editor all the way across the world from her home in CA to get away from her ex, Pete, only to find out Pete is the man who has been assigned as her photographer for the assignment. Naturally, they have to figure out a way to get past the awkwardness of their current relationship--especially since they both still have feelings for one another.
I've read most of the Timeless Romance Anthologies, but somehow, I've missed this one! This is the first story of the European collection and I just read it...and loved it.
Anna is so brave! Working for a newspaper, one that her ex-boyfriend also works at, gives her the chance to go to Finland to cover the Winter War. I honestly don't know if I could put myself in danger's path, so I had to admire her for that. Imagine her surprise to find that her ex is also over there and they "get" to work together!
I've often heard it said, and have found it to be true, that there are always two sides to a story. Through a series of assumptions and misunderstandings, their relationship fizzled and I loved the second chance. These collections are great because I always know I'll get a good, clean story that's perfect for one sitting.
Content mild war violence; mild romance. Clean!
I originally read War of Hearts as part of the Annette Lyon Collection from Timeless Romance Anthologies, but it's also in the European Collection.
I love the setting of this story - The Winter War is possibly a lesser known story of WWII. I personally didn't recall this event from my history classes, but it has been many years since I took a history class, too! I truly appreciated the author's historical note that gave me a little more insight to the event.
With this war as the backdrop, the story of Anna and Pete comes to life. Anna literally begs her employer for the opportunity to cover the Finnish war with the Soviets. Yes, she has an ulterior motive - she's trying to escape her ex-boyfriend, Pete, who broke her heart and also works for the same newspaper as a photographer. Little did she know, Pete was the photographer covering the same story. When the two again come face-to-face they have to put their feelings aside and work together, but then the Soviets arrive.
This is a wonderful story about misunderstandings and a second chance at love, but also an emotional glimpse into WWII. As with all novellas, I would have loved for it to have been longer - for the historical aspect, and the character development/fictional story.

I really enjoyed the historical setting for this novel and then to read the reason why at the end. You begin to feel for the characters right away. Great read.
